This is an aside titled 'Charlotte Roche’s Female Perversions' dated 6/9/08

Is Charlotte Roche the lady JG Ballard? The passages I’ve read are quite horrible (this from someone who adores Elfriede Jelinek, even at her most scathing) nevertheless, I’m delighted to see a book described as part Crash, part Germaine Greer’s The Female Eunuch.

It’s a great novel. Very funny. Very creative. Very refreshing. Very different. But it will be extremely hard to stomach for the average American. I’m not even sure it get past the censors, at least in Southern states.

It’s wrong for me to judge a book I’ve never read, but I can’t get past Roche’s enthusiastic pronouncement that she hasn’t bothered reading a book herself in four years other than, (zzz) “The Great Gatsby.” For all I’ve heard about the sex and shit in it, there’s little discussion of a plot to the book. I’m picturing less Erica Jong than Molly Jong Fast, and that’s not good.

Thankfully there’s no risk of the book getting censored here. American stomaches are stronger than you think — after all, for better or worse, we’re responsible for 2 Girls 1 Cup going viral.
